During the 1970s, Iran’s national beauty pageant emerged as a prominent cultural event, reflecting the era’s vibrant social and artistic life. These competitions were more than ceremonial occasions; they were major public gatherings that brought together fashion, performance, and celebration, capturing the spirit of a rapidly modernizing society.

In 1977, Zan-e Rooz magazine—the organizer of the national pageant—introduced an important change to the event’s format. In an effort to enhance both the prestige and the entertainment value of the final night, the organizers incorporated live musical performances by well-known artists. That year, Afsaneh Bani Ardalan was crowned Dokhtareh Shayesteh Iran (Worthy Girl of Iran). One of the most memorable moments of the evening was a performance by the celebrated Iranian singer Googoosh, whose appearance generated great excitement among the audience and further heightened national attention toward the event.

Following her national title, Afsaneh represented Iran at Miss Teenage Intercontinental 1977, a competition previously known as Miss International Teen Princess. Competing alongside participants from many countries, she achieved fourth place overall—an accomplishment that marked a notable moment for Iran in international beauty pageants.
